A sessions court here on Tuesday framed charges against Hardik Patel and his two key aides, Dinesh Bambhaniya and Chirag Patel, in a sedition case filed in connection with the violence during the Patidar community’s quota agitation in August 2015.
Additional Sessions Judge Dilip P Mahida read out the charges against the three, and said they will be tried for sedition (IPC Section 124A) and conspiracy to commit offences punishable by Section 121 (of the IPC) to read with criminal conspiracy (IPC Section 120B). If convicted, the maximum sentence for sedition is life imprisonment.
The trial is most likely to begin from January 29, the next date for the hearing in the case.
Earlier in the morning, the Crime Branch arrested Dinesh Bambhaniya for failing to appear in the court on previous occasions. Another accused, Ketan Patel, has been pardoned by the court after he turned approver in the case. Co-accused Alpesh Katheriya was arrested in August, while the sixth accused, Amrish Patel, is yet to be arrested.
