Two students of a city-based school in Agartala who had left for Mumbai with the dream of “becoming someone before they return”, were traced from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the city on Tuesday, five days after they left home, officials said here.

The children are expected to reach Tripura on Wednesday along with their parents and police officials, Kiran Kumar, West Tripura Superintendent of Police, told reporters.

“Two children of class 8 at Hindi Higher Secondary School in the city had gone to their tuition classes. They never returned back home. We had taken a specific case at East Agartala police station based on the parents’ complaints. We formed a special team and started an investigation. They were traced at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai on Tuesday. Their parents and police would be bringing them back tomorrow,” Kumar said.

According to preliminary investigation, the children had gone to Mumbai with aspirations of “becoming someone”.

“They went to the city saying they would achieve something, become someone and only then return. They left on March 7 and they were traced five days later. Details are still being investigated. We are in touch with the Mumbai police. The children are in safe custody,” SP Kiran Kumar said.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, later took to social media to laud the achievement of the police officials in tracing the boys. “These two minor students were recovered at Mumbai with prompt action from Tripura Police. They will be returned to Agartala and will be handed over to their families. The role of state police in tracing the two minors is praiseworthy,” he wrote on X.
