At least two persons, including a woman, were injured in two blasts in Manipur’s Bishnupur district early on Monday.

According to police, an IED exploded around 5.45 am inside an abandoned house in Saiton Ngaukon village under Phougakchao Ikhai police station.

Police personnel who rushed to the spot found a blast crater inside the house, along with blackening and splinter marks on the inner walls and the floor, indicating the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED), police said. The structure was found partially damaged. No casualty or injury was reported as the house was unoccupied, they added.

The house, belonging to one Salam Mani Singh, has been abandoned since violence erupted on May 3, 2023. The owner is currently taking shelter at a relief camp in Keibul Lamjao.

On learning about the explosion, a large number of enraged locals gathered near the area and confronted the security forces, accusing them of failing to protect the houses.

An initial report said that as the mob forced its way towards the blast site, another bomb exploded around 8.45pm, injuring two people.

While the type of bomb used in the second blast, which took place 200 metres from the site of the first explosion, remains unclear, police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
