Social media has been abuzz with speculation that actor Mouni Roy has undergone a forehead reduction surgery, a cosmetic procedure that reduces the size of the forehead by surgically lowering the hairline. What lent credence to the story was Roy’s recent public appearances, where she was seen in stills with a mop of hair concealing her forehead and at an event with two frown-like bumps and folds on her forehead.
“Such ridges and marks are consistent with the after effects of such a surgery. These remain for a few weeks and then disappear,” says South Delhi-based plastic surgeon Dr Anup Dhir.
Some people have a high forehead or a receding hairline that makes the top half of the head look bigger than it is, disturbing the overall balance of the face. Some people have a bulging forehead. What we do is make incision marks on the hairline and the forehead. Then we remove the strip of skin in between these parallel lines, pull down the hairline and tuck it to the desired forehead line with sutures. No fillers are put in this area. This procedure allows the hairline to be lowered for a maximum of 2 to 3 cm.
Other than ensuring proportionality, sometimes the scalp line is lowered to make up for loss of hair in the frontal part of the forehead.
The corrected face proportionality holds good for a long time. What matters is the elasticity of the scalp. Its stability depends on a good plastic surgeon. Do not attempt this with a dermatologist.
It lasts between one and three hours under a general anaesthetic and is done as a day procedure. You may need a compression bandage and some pain medication. Some people can resume their normal activities within days, others may need up to a week. Keep the incision area clean till the stitches are removed after a week.
There can be some redness, bruising and swelling, numbness and temporary hair loss at the incision site. The bumps and scars may be visible for the first few weeks and fade away over six months. You can protect the incision area by wearing a hat or adopting a frontal hairstyle that will hide the stitches.
It is as safe as any other minor surgical procedure.
If it is a question of balancing your face with a crop of hair, then advanced hair transplant techniques, especially FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) works better. Here individual hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head using a small punch tool and then transplanted to the recipient area.
The cost of forehead reduction surgery in India ranges from Rs 45,000 to Rs 1,00,000, depending on cities and the level of expertise.
