There are reports that Buzzfeed Life pulled down a story which was critical of the Dove short film “Choose Beautiful”. The original Buzzfeed post was updated to say that it was not in consonance with the “tone of Buzzfeed Life”. The Gawker report adds that over the years Buzzfeed has pulled down posts that were critical of their major ad buys.
The video in question produced by Dove United States was aimed at encouraging and inspiring women worldwide by persuading them to reconsider the choices they make about their beauty.
The short film, shot in five countries captures real women of San Francisco, Shanghai, Delhi, London and São Paulo considering their own beauty, was launched on video-sharing website YouTube on April 7, 2015 and has received more than 1.95 million hits.
In the film, the women made a choice about the way they see themselves – ‘average’ versus the frequently avoided, ‘beautiful’.
“While we were filming, it was so clear that the women who chose to feel beautiful shined with a positive, empowered outlook. We all have the personal and powerful ability to rise above others’ points of view, social media and pop culture. I hope the film inspires women around the world to reconsider how they view their own beauty,” Paul Dektor, the film’s director, said in a statement.
