France vs Croatia, FIFA World Cup 2018 highlights: This World Cup has been one in which making predictions had been turned into a futile exercise and so it is only fitting that it ended with a six-goal thriller. At the Luzhniki stadium on Sunday, we saw the first ever own goal to be scored in a final, the first ever VAR penalty, a goalkeeping blooper and three absolute beauties from Perisic, Pogba and Mbappe to square it all off. Mbappe was also the first teenager to score in the World Cup final since a certain Brazilian called Pele did so a long time back. Didier Deschamps lifted the World Cup trophy as captain of France in 1998, he did so again as as manager of his natonal team.

So that's it then

This may be the umpteenth time you are reading this but it is the truth; this World Cup has given us everything. It gave us some high octane football at almost every turn and the likes of Belgium and Croatia finally stepped up on the biggest stage of them all. But it is also important to note that this year we saw a number of teams punching above their weights, including hosts Russia themselves, at a time when FIFA's decision to expand the 2026 tournament to include 48 teams has got a polarised response.

Finally, there are the champions. France's much-awaited golden age is finally here. The national team has been steadily receiving talented players over the past few years and their strength was on display on the 2016 Euros. They fell at the final hurdle on that instance but not this time. Once they got a grip on the match, they never let go and converted almost every chance they got to score. They are worthy champions. That's it from here but we will be putting up more reactions and analyses over the next few hours. Keep an eye on this space for more.

Looking back (Part 1)

So in case you somehow missed all of this despite it being a Sunday evening affair, here is a rundown of what happened: You missed one of the greatest World Cup finals ever played. There was an own goal, a VAR penalty, Ivan Perisic, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe scored beauties and the latter became the only teenager other than Pele to have scored in the World Cup final. The Brazilian took notice of that and seems to be a bit worried about his record.

Just as the teams come up for their medals, it starts pouring in Russia. The French players, or the country's president Emannuel Macron, who is there on the dais to greet his players, won't mind that one bit.

FULL TIME! FRANCE WIN THE 2018 WORLD CUP. The French players stream onto the pitch, Didier Deschamps in tow. He is the third man to win the World Cup as a player and as a manager. The Croatians sink, they will despair but their people will be proud of them. This was one of the greatest finals to have ever decided a World Cup. Luka Modric and co. have made a proud run in this tournament and have established themselves as the greatest team their country has ever produced. It is only fitting that a World Cup that has featured so many great matches ends with a six-goal thriller.

90+4 mins: Mbappe and Pogba combine down the right and try to find another goal. Pogba squanders possession. Not that France would mind.

90 mins: Griezmann taken down by Vrsaljko and the referee gives France the free kick. Vrsaljko obviously remonstrates angrily. Five minutes added.

85 mins: Pjaca could have played Vrsaljko in but the latter is not exactly on the same wavelength as his teammates. Croatia are slowly losing their urgency.

80 mins: Changes for both sides: France take off Giroud for Fekir, Croatia replace Strinic with Pjaca. They will be playing with a back three of Lovren, Vida and Vrsaljko now.

76 mins: After that 9-minute period in which we saw three goals (!!!!!) there is a brief lull in the match. Croatia are still holding more of the ball. They are not done yet.

GOAL! France 4-2 Croatia (Mandzukic 69 mins): Well, a good old-fashioned goalkeeping blooper was the only thing missing from this match. Lloris had the ball on his feet, Mandzukic was running towards him in that doubtful way that strikers do. The France keeper simply put the ball into his path and it bounced off Mandzukic's feet and rolls into goal. Lloris probably wanted to make this final more of a competition as Croatia were falling apart up until this point.

GOAL! France 4-1 Croatia (Kylian Mbappe 65 mins): If that is the last goal to be scored in this World Cup, not many would be unhappy with it. Kylian Mbappe is the first teenager to score a goal in the World Cup final since a certain young Brazilian player called Pele did it a long time ago. Mbappe took a shot from well outside the box along the ground. The placement was perfect and Subasic could not get his hands to it.

GOAL! France 3-1 Croatia (Paul Pogba 59 mins): Pogba started that move and finished it splendidly. His first shot was blocked but the ball landed straight back onto his feet. He goes for it again, Subasic is wrong-footed and the ball nestles in the back of the net. 20 years after Zinedine Zidane scored in the second half to increase France's lead in the '98 World Cup final over Brazil to two goals, Pogba has done the same.

France vs Croatia Live Score Streaming, FIFA World Cup 2018 Final Live Streaming: Zlatko Dalic’s coaching career has mirrored his team’s campaign at the World Cup – a long, hard road to recognition and respect on the back of the hard currency of results. The 51-year-old was mentored by Miroslav Blazevic, the architect of the young nation’s journey to the 1998 World Cup semi-finals, but made the decision in 2010 that moving to the Gulf was the only way to prove his worth as a coach. Seven years on, he took over a Croatia squad in disarray and slowly rebuilt the unity that has allowed them to get the best out of their individual talent and reach Sunday’s final against France. “I have always been an optimist throughout my time in the dugout,” Dalic said through a translator on Thursday. “I look for positives in everything. We have had many problems, if I had created more problems, we would not be in the final. “The culture of our national team was in tatters, with players boycotting the shirt. Now we are in the final and people are celebrating on the streets. If I played a small part in that, then I am very happy.”
