Kairana tehsil which grabbed the national media attention after BJP MP Hukum Singh released a list of 346 Hindu families which he claimed had fled from their homes over ‘threat and extortion by criminal elements belonging to a particular community,’ falls under Shamli district which was created in September, 2011.
Shamli was initially named Prabuddh Nagar by then chief minister Mayawati. In July 2012, after Akhilesh Yadav became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Prabuddh Nagar was renamed as Shamli.
Sub-divisional magistrate, Kairana, Ram Avtar Gupta said, prior to creation of Shamli district, Kairana was tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district.
Kairana shares border with Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Bagpat and also Haryana. Kairna whose population is over one lakh is dominated by the Muslim comunity who are around 70 percent and most of them are involved in small business and farming. Many work as daily wage labourers and travel to neighbouring districts for earning.
Families belonging to the Hindu community are also in business and farming, whereas the poor work as labourers.
As of the 2011 India census, Kairna’s literacy rate is 47.23 percent. Male literacy in Kairana is 55.16 percent, and female literacy is 38.24 percent. There is one post-graduate degree college and several intermediate colleges.
Hukum Singh was seven-time MLA from Kairana assembly seat before he won the 2014 Parliament election from there.
