The outburst by Samajwadi Party’s national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav against Governor Ram Naik — terming him a RSS Swayamsewak– did not come as a surprise in Uttar Pradesh. This is the second time the SP has attacked the governor directly — on both occasions the issues raised by Raj Bhavan had a direct impact on the poll prospects of the SP.

The SP had known that with an NDA government at the Centre and its governor in the state hiccups would occur. The bonhomie with Raj Bhavan was brief with the governor sticking to rules in clearing various bills, holding up the MLC nomination list, objecting to the Lokyukta appointment. Through all of this the SP squirmed but could do little. It remained uneasy but not overly concerned as these issues did not affect public opinion. The veiled war of words continued but SP leaders avoided direct references to the governor.

However, when Governor Ram Naik raised two issues — the appointment of Yadavs to government posts and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state,- the SP knew that these would have a negative fallout in the public mind and would benefit the opposition.

In July, Ram Naik took issue with the state government over complaints of the mass appointment of officials to prime posts from one caste: the Yadavs. The SP knew that the issue would result in adverse reactions against the party among non-Yadav communities. In no time at all, Mulayam Singh’s cousin Ram Gopal Yadav released a list of all officials — along with a few Yadav names on it — to substantiate the claim that the community was not calling the shots. Ram Gopal also directly attacked the governor, urging the PM to make Naik the CM candidate for the 2017 elections.

Two day ago, when the SP was still on the offensive against the BJP over the Dadri lynching incident, Ram Naik raised questions on the rising number of communal incidents in the state due to the poor law and order situation. The issue is on the poll plank of the BJP and once the governor takes it up, it is taken seriously by the public and the media.

Once again, Ram Gopal lashed out at the governor directly, calling him a RSS Swayamsewak and demanding that he should be appointed a minister in the central government due to his political statements.

As the assembly elections draw closer, any issue raised by Raj Bhavan will see the SP respond aggressively.
