The death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes has raised questions about the future of the Islamic Republic as well as the larger region.

Khamenei was one of only two Supreme Leaders in Iran. According to Iranian law, a clerical panel called the Assembly of Experts “must, as soon as possible” pick a new supreme leader.

The process, however, is likely to be complex. For now, a temporary council has been formed to govern the country. Khamenei is believed to have picked candidates to succeed him, but their names were never made public. Iran’s constitution also lays down the procedure for naming a successor.
