Sarah Burton Bids Adieu To Alexander McQueen With Her Final Collection In Paris

For her final bow, Burton’s collection took inspiration from the female anatomy

At Le Carreau du Temple during Paris Fashion Week, Sarah Burton unveiled her farewell collection for Alexander McQueen after 26 years with the company, 13 of those which she spent as the creative director. 

Burton had joined the brand in 1997, and became the creative director at Alexander McQueen after the death of Lee McQueen in 2010. The garments from her final collection, titled Anatomy II, featured signature Burton tailoring and multiple interpretations of the red rose. Her departure note for her swan song collection read: “This collection is inspired by female anatomy, Queen Elizabeth I, the blood red rose and Magdalena Abakanowicz, a transgressive and powerfully creative artist who refused ever to compromise her vision. The show is dedicated to the memory of Lee Alexander McQueen, whose wish was always to empower women, and to the passion, talent and loyalty of my team.”

The show was opened by Kaia Gerber, dressed in a tailored black wool dress with slices at the shoulders, while supermodel Naomi Campbell closed the show in a silver silk tulle corset worn over a skirt, wiping away soft tears. Post the show, Burton took her final bow to a standing ovation from the room. While her successor has not yet been announced, Burton’s collection is a testament to her enduring legacy and her craft that has vowed audiences for almost three decades.
