Catch A Glimpse Of Kerala’s Spirited Oars At The Nehru Trophy Boat Race
This year, the 69th edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) will be held on Punnamada Lake on August 12
As rain drenches the southern states in monsoon, Kerala’s backwaters come alive with gaiety and music to prepare for an annual regatta called ‘snake boat race’. Hundreds of participants, who have been prepping for months, get their chundan vallams (snake boats) ready to take to the banks of many backwaters in the state as they compete for the coveted trophy. Out of all the races that mark the Onam season in Malabar, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race stands out for its sheer grandeur that offers a vivid visual of Kerala’s vibrant traditions.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, inaugurated in 1952, traces its origins to a friendly boat race held in honour of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru who travelled from Kottayam to Alappuzha by boat, through water logged Kuttanad. During this visit, an impromptu race marked the beginning of this momentous tradition. Since then, the race has grown in scale and stature, evolving into a grand festival that captivates both locals and tourists alike.

Every year, on the second Saturday of August, Alappuzha gears up for a carnival as the tranquil waters come alive with energy and excitement. The snake boats, adorned with ornate decorations and vibrant flags, resemble snakes gliding through the water. Traditional music and dance performances, including the captivating ‘vanchipattu’ (boat songs), create a thrilling atmosphere. The boats, which are oiled to ensure smooth rowing, are often large enough to carry over a 100 oarsmen and women who dash towards the finish line in a bid to win the Nehru Trophy.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race has transcended its cultural roots to become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. There are many other prominent boat races in the state too such as Aranmula Boat Race, Payippad Boat Race, Thazhathangadi Boat Race and Karuvatta Boat Race. As per reports, 72 boats including 19 chundan vallams will participate under nine categories in this year’s Nehru Trophy race.
