Of Past And Present: A Guide To Exploring Pune

A handy guide to discovering this historical city through its heritage sites

The bustling metropolis of Pune was once the stronghold of the Maratha empire. Steeped in history and heritage, multitudes of museums and forts offer a glimpse into the city’s rich past. And if you’re in Pune for the weekend, here is how you can explore this modern city that still exudes an age-old charm.

Aga Khan Palace: Located in Yerwada, this palace was built by  Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892, and was used as a prison during India’s struggle for independence. This is where Mahatma Gandhi was once imprisoned, as was his wife Kasturba Gandhi, and Sarojini Naidu. Today, the palace stands as a museum, and is also the headquarters of the Gandhi National Memorial Society, housing several of his personal belongings and photographs.

Shaniwar Wada: Once the seat of the Peshwa rulers, this fort-palace is a magnificent structure that boasts intricate carvings and local architecture. Popularised by the movie Bajirao Mastani, Shaniwar Wada has the stunning Dilli Darwaza, a gateway large enough to admit elephants. Another structure, called Mastani Darwaza is equally beautiful, said to have been built for Bajirao 1’s second wife. Make sure to opt for a guided tour of the fort to immerse yourself in its rich history.

Sinhagad Fort: Perched atop a hill a few kilometres from the main city, this historical fortification was earlier called Kondhana, and its current name translates into Lion’s Fort. It is believed to have been renamed after Shivaji’s trusted general who battled with the Mughals and was martyred in the fight. Today, visitors can explore the fort, enjoy panoramic views of the city and go hiking and birding around its rocky terrain.

Shivneri Fort: Located in Junnar near Pune city, this fort is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha Empire and was built to protect the trading route between the Deccan plateau and the port city of Kalyan.  Built in the 17th century, this fort has statues of Jijabai and a young Shivaji, along with two water springs, called Ganga and Yamuna, which are believed to be replete with water all year. In 2021, the fort was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Vishrambaug Wada: Built by the last Peshwa, Bajirao II, this three-building structure or wada has an eye-catching wooden facade and teak columns. Once a mansion that housed Peshwa Bajirao II, it is today a restored structure with a museum that gives it a coveted spot in many heritage walks in the city.
