Monsoon Getaway: Chug Back In Time In Kurseong

A short drive from Darjeeling, this eastern gem is often overlooked but deserves a closer visit, especially during monsoon

With a rich history that dates back to the colonial era, Kurseong in West Bengal is a quaint hill station tucked away in the rolling hills of the Eastern Himalayas with unmatched views of Mt Kanchenjunga.

In the local Lepcha language, Kurseong means ‘Land of the White Orchids’. Initially inhabited by the Lepcha tribe, this hill town gained prominence during the British Raj when it served as a hill retreat for colonial administrators and tea planters. During the British days, it was known more as a medical town, with a TB Sanatorium, which is still in existence. On the other hand, this town was also home to some of the best residential schools established by the British.

During this time, Kurseong became an essential stop along the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly known as the “Toy Train.” The railway, a marvel of engineering, connected Kurseong to Darjeeling and other nearby towns, facilitating the transportation of tea, timber, and other commodities. Today, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway still runs through Kurseong, offering visitors a nostalgic journey back in time.

Overshadowed by neighbouring hill stations like Darjeeling, Kurseong seldom features on travel bucket lists. But only a slightly closer look reveals the town’s incredible cultural and natural wonders. Here is how you can make the most of your time in this town:

Visit the tea gardens: Immerse yourself in the mesmerising beauty of Kurseong’s tea gardens with tours of Ambootia Tea Estate, Makaibari Tea Estate, or Castleton Tea Estate to witness the tea-making process firsthand. Enjoy freshly brewed tea amidst the lush greenery and panoramic vistas, and learn about the region’s rich tea heritage.

Ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: No trip to Kurseong is complete without a trip aboard the famous vintage steam engine train – Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), which most of us know as the ‘Toy Train’. The journey traverses misty mountains and offers enchanting views of valleys, tea gardens, and quaint hillside villages. There is little to wonder why DHR was given the UNESCO World Heritage site tag.

Netaji Museum: In 1936, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was interned by the British Government for seven months at a home in Gidda Hill in Kurseong. From the confines of this residence, Netaji wrote several letters to other freedom fighters. This historic house is now the Netaji Museum under the Netaji Institute for Asian Studies. His belongings, including a fascinating collection of rare photographs and letters, have been preserved here.
