Held within the vast and picturesque Entabeni Game Reserve in South Africa, the Big Five Marathon offers a unique combination of wildlife encounters and rugged terrain. Officially the coolest marathon on the planet, for more than one reason, the Polar Circle Marathon is not for the fainthearted. Prepare to push the boundaries of human endurance in one of the world’s most extreme environments at the Polar Circle Marathon in Greenland. Held on the ice-covered tundra just north of the Arctic Circle, this race presents runners with the ultimate test of physical and mental fortitude. Battling sub-zero temperatures and traversing snow-covered landscapes, participants are rewarded with stunning views of the pristine Arctic wilderness and the possibility of witnessing the mesmerising Northern Lights.

In the land of the midnight sun, the Midnight Sun Marathon is a race like no other. Held every year since 1990 in Tromsø, the Arctic capital of Norway, this northernmost marathon sees 6000 participants from all over the world. Taking place during the summer solstice, when the sun never sets on this land, participants run under the magical glow of the midnight sun. There are five different distances to choose from: Marathon (42,2km), Mizuno Half Marathon (21,1km), Coop Mila (10km), MSM Mini-marathon (4,4km) and SNN Kids Race (500m). The combination of stunning fjords, snow-capped mountains, and the ethereal illumination is a bucket-list activity for most avid runners.

The Iceland Volcano Marathon takes place near Lake Mývatn, an area famous for its geothermal activity and unique volcanic formations. The marathon course winds through volcanic craters, lava fields, and lava caves, offering participants a front-row seat to witness Iceland’s geological wonders up close. Runners can choose between marathon, half marathon or quarter marathon.
