The Leftovers: Hotstar

This show is a rarity as it even after being an HBO show and good one at that, it did not receive a lot of attention. In The Leftovers, 2% of the world's population simply disappears. You might think 2% is almost nothing, but when it comes to the total number of people in the world, it is a lot. The show revolves around how people are dealing with the aftermath.

Lore: Amazon Prime Video

An Amazon Original, Lore is based on a podcast of the same name. Every episode of the show tells the origins of a horror story and although it is more of a documentary than drama, it is a slickly produced show that is engaging enough for a binge. You might want to check out the podcast as well. It is sublime.

Altered Carbon: Netflix

If your consciousness, practically the real 'you', can be converted to code, then the possibilities are endless, and not all of them pleasant. This is the premise of cyberpunk series Altered Carbon. The second season is streaming now.

Lost: Netflix

Despite its controversial ending, ABC's Lost is still the definitive science-fiction drama show. The series had complex mythology whose details were revealed teasingly, bit by bit. The show also provided ample backstories of major characters through flashbacks that made them more fleshed-out than characters in other epic TV series. .

The Man in the High Castle: Amazon Prime Video

Based on an intriguing what-if premise, The Man in the High Castle is an alternate reality show. In this world, the Axis powers won and the United States was carved up between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. Common Americans live under two foreign, oppressive regimes and they are resigned to their fate... until the people come across another reality -- our reality -- according to which things could be better.

Rick and Morty: Netflix

The animated series follows a mad but brilliant scientist Rick Sanchez and his naive, impressionable grandson Morty Smith's adventures across faraway galaxies, planets, parallel worlds, different realities and so on.  Rick and Morty boasts some of the most intelligent writing in the medium currently, with jokes that are easy to miss if the attention wavers even a little. This is Us: Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video

Basically a family drama, This is Us contains many strands of romantic, flawed relationships. There is an element of switching between past and present here too, but while Outlander has actual time-travel, This is Us has good-old flashbacks.

Outlander: Netflix

This Starz series tells us that love-stories do not simply just exist, they are often improbable. The central love-story in this show is between a 20th-century Englishwoman and an 18th-century Scottish man. Claire is transported back in time and meets a Scottish young man she falls in love with. She does have a husband in her time and she is faithful, but there is no way to get to him. Outlander streams on Netflix.

13:24 (IST)23 Mar 2020
iZombie: Netflix

If only the zombies in The Walking Dead knew they would not lose their wits if they had a ready supply of human brains. At least that is the premise if this show, which is equal parts horrifying and funny (uproariously so). If you liked zombie comedies like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, you can't go wrong with this one.

12:54 (IST)23 Mar 2020
A Series of Unfortunate Events: Netflix

This show is based on the children book series of the same name and follows two young siblings as they try to protect themselves and their fortune from the devilish Count Olaf (played with a menacing glee by the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris). The series is the right mix of horror and comedy and you scarcely mind the improbability of the events unfolding before you, since it is incredibly entertaining.

12:31 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Netflix

This one is among the weirder and eccentric shows. Frodo of Lord of the Rings movies, Elijah Wood, plays an everyman whose life is turned into a veritable whirlwind a flamboyantly British "holistic" detective; holistic because he believes everything in the universe to be interconnected. And indeed, he has a seemingly preternatural ability. The feel of the show is like from one of the more strange comic-books from the 80s came to life. The story is loosely based on the writings of the great Douglas Adams.

12:09 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Black Sails: Netflix

There are few good shows on pirates, and Black Sails sits pretty on the top. Although the first season was marred by more talking than action, Black Sails picks up from second, gets better in third, and goes out with a bang with its fourth and final season. The story is the prequel of Treasure Island, classic adventure book by  Robert Louis Stevenson.

11:34 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Homecoming: Amazon Prime Video

Julia Roberts stars in this psychologicla thriller based on the podcast of the same name created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. Roberts plays the role of a social worker at a facility that apparently helps soldiers coming from war zones transition to the civilian life. Though, it is done by making the soldiers basically forget the bad stuff, creating a blank space in its place.

Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Shea Whigham also star in this tight, compelling thriller that needs to be watched to appreciate the superlative writing and performances.

16:47 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Supernatural: Amazon Prime Video

There is nothing like watching an atmospheric horror show. Supernatural is not one however, but is does have plenty of scares coupled with excellent characters (you could not ask for more developed characters than Winchester brothers) which makes it a solid TV show even if a sort of guilty pleasure.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story: Netflix

Ryan Murphy’s anthology game remains strong. The Assassination of Gianni Versace was a worthy followup to The People v. O. J. Simpson.

A deliciously funny and really well-written saga, HBO's Succession is a hypnotic watch from start to finish.

15:09 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Bojack Horseman: Netflix

This American adult animated web television series tells the story of BoJack Horseman (voiced by Will Arnett), a washed-up star of a 1990s sitcom who plans his return to celebrity relevance with an autobiography. The show is regarded by some as one of the greatest animated television series of all time. It stands out for its realistic take on dealing with depression, trauma, addiction, self-destructive behavior, racism, sexism, sexuality, and the human condition. The makers of the show decided to end the series with the sixth season and it is a definite must-watch. Fair warning: It gets very real.

Ishq: Amazon Prime

Ishq, the Malayalam movie which hit the screens last year, is NOT a love story. The movie beautifully portrays a number of issues that is very prevalent in our society today, like moral policing, toxic masculinity etc. It is the anti-thesis of Kabir Singh. The movie disects aggresive patriarchy in such a way, that you will feel claustrophic. Click this link if you want more details about the film.
