Vishwak Sen writes heartfelt note after Laila failure: ‘I promise my films will never cross the line into vulgarity’

Affected by the back-to-back failures, Vishwak pointed out that he has always gravitated towards stories that would connect with the audience

Vishwak Sen on Laila criticismVishwak Sen opens up about criticism against his recent film, Laila.

2024 started strongly for Vishwak Sen with Gaami even if the other two films — Gangs of Godavari and Mechanic Rocky — that released the same year received a cold shoulder. But none of these films faced the fate of his 2025 opener, Laila, which not only performed poorly at the box office, but received highly negative reviews from critics and the audience alike.

Responding to the overwhelming criticism against Laila, Vishwak released a statement accepting the ‘constructive criticism.’ Starting off by acknowledging that his films haven’t ‘met expectations,’ he write, “My last film received constructive criticism, which I wholeheartedly accept. To my well-wishers and those who believe in me, I sincerely apologize.”

Reiterating his intention to bring something ‘fresh’ to his audience with every film, Vishwak said that he respects the feedback that has come his way. “Moving forward, I promise that whether my films are class or mass, they will never cross the line into vulgarity. If I make a bad film, you have every right to criticize me because it was you who stood by me with unconditional love when I had no one,” wrote Vishwak.

Affected by the back-to-back failures, Vishwak Sen pointed out that he has always gravitated towards stories that would connect with the audience, and that would continue. “From now on, it won’t just be about making good films, every single scene of mine will count. I also want to take his moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the producers and distributors who have placed their trust in me and supported my journey.”

He also thanked the directors and writers and called them the ‘backbone’ of his acting career. “Thank you for all your constructive criticism. I will be back soon with a strong and promising project. Until then, I truly appreciate your unwavering support through my highs and lows. It means the world to me.”

In his review of Laila, SCREEN’s Avinash Ramachandran, “It is just that the jokes are mostly unfunny, the visuals are always voyeuristic to a fault, and the film confuses depravity and titillation. Also, the whole idea of Laila isn’t explored enough either, and for lengthy stretches of the film, the character is objectified, and never allowed a moment of honesty.”
