As expected, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari has set the Telugu box office on fire. Director Anil Ravipudi has treated fans of the Tollywood star to a toned-down commercial film. However, he has still managed to make it work by delivering ‘mass moments’. The film has also appealed to neutral cinema-goers, who have welcomed this sober film Balayya, who is known for over-the-top heroism. The film has minted Rs 20 crore from across India on opening day, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.
This is a significant number, as the film clashed against Vijay’s Leo. The Tamil star’s Telugu market is not as huge as Balakrishna. However, the hype surrounding the movie and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cinematic universe have earned the Tamil film about Rs 15 crore from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. That makes Bhagavanth Kesari’s Day 1 collection, in the face of huge competition, a significant feat.
The average theatre occupancy of Bhagavanth Kesari in the two Telugu-speaking states was around 65 per cent. With the upcoming long weekend, the film’s collection is expected to be better than Day 1. The film is expected to continue its momentum though it will be facing competition from Ravi Teja’s Tiger Nageswara Rao, which is debuting on Friday.
Also starring Sreeleela, Kajal Aggarwal, and Arjun Rampal, the film follows the story of Bhagavanth Kesari (Balakrishna), who struggles to make his dead friend’s daughter Viji (Sreeleela) an Army officer against all odds. The film has music by S Thaman.
Raghu Bandi of Indian Express rated the film with 2.5 stars and wrote, “Bhagavanth Kesari tries hard not to be a regular Nandamuri Balakrishna movie while having all the signature moments die-hard fans will expect from him… Bhagavanth Kesari has its dull moments, but it also has its entertaining moments. All in all, the movie is a decent entertainer this Dasara.”
