Succession is all set to premiere its final season in a few days and the initial reviews, based on the first four episodes, are out. The show has been an awards darling from the start and has dominated pop culture conversation during its entire run. Creator Jesse Armstrong’s declaration that this was going to be Succession’s last season came as a shock to viewers but nevertheless, it seems like the show is going to end on a high.
Variety’s Joshua Alston called Succession Season 4 a “brisk, brutal and hilarious final season” and wrote in his review, “While the season takes a bit longer to catch fire than its predecessors, once the shady dealing begins in earnest, Succession is more intense than ever. And with the series finale in sight, the show has a full tank of gas and an 800-pound gorilla’s foot on the pedal.”
Collider’s Samantha Coley said that the upcoming season was “telling a more cohesive story than ever before, with all the threads weaving together quite nicely.” A part of the review read, “The result is a season that is even more engaging than its predecessors, leaving you hanging on every word of snappy dialogue.” It further read, “Season 4 of Succession is extremely well-balanced, with moments of humor peppered throughout a dramatic, twist-and-turn-filled narrative that will leave you eager for more.”
BBC’s Caryn James did not give any spoilers in the review and wrote that Jesse “has structured the season for maximum jaw-dropping effect.”
The Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall wrote that Jesse seemed determined about ending the series “on the highest of highs”. “By choosing to wrap things up relatively early, Jesse Armstrong has the opportunity to offer a great finale, while also getting off the stage before anyone begins to feel the show has lost a step,” read a part of the review.
