Anupam Kher on Wednesday stepped down as the chairperson of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), citing international film and TV assignments. In his resignation letter, the actor has mentioned his acting commitments in the US which are keeping him away from his responsibility. Kher is currently a part of the American show New Amsterdam, which began airing last month.
So, what exactly is New Amsterdam?
New Amsterdam is an American medical drama which also stars Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Freema Agyeman and Tyler Labine. It is based on the book titled Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital written by Eric Manheimer. The show has been created by David Schulner.

It premiered on September 22 with its first season comprising of 13 episodes. However, days after it began airing, it was announced that an additional nine episodes have been ordered, which took the number of episodes to 22.
New Amsterdam has so far aired six episodes and has received mixed reviews. It primarily revolves around Doctor Max Goodwin played by Ryan Eggold. He joins the hospital as the newest medical director with an aim to provide extraordinary care to the patients and break the bureaucracy in order to uplift the neglected facility.
Anupam Kher plays the character of Doctor Vijay Kapoor, an MD and the Chair of Neurology at the New Amsterdam hospital. The Bollywood veteran had recently shared a video where he took us through his room at the fictional hospital.
Having black & white pics of my parents #DulariAndPushkar in #DrVijayKspoor’s office in @NBCNewAmsterdam made me very happy. It also made me revisit their life. From their honeymoon to their being married for 59years. I miss my father but #DulariRocks. She is both my parents. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/Adfpdv4vAg

In an exclusive interview with indianexpress.com, Kher had revealed how time constraint had kept him away from television. “Earlier, I did not know how to manage time because I used to get frightened at the thought of them asking for a commitment of so many years before even the pilot was shot. I was involved in too many projects in India and other places as well so I did not say okay to committing for too much time before… This time I wanted to be a part of a TV show because I wanted to work regularly on a series and I committed six months for that. I will still get the remaining six months to work anywhere else,” he shared.
