Vetrimaaran, one of the most influential filmmakers in Tamil cinema over the past decade, has also been a driving force in promoting independent filmmaking voices. His production house, Grass Root Film Company, has backed several critically acclaimed films, including Poriyalan, Kaaka Muttai, Inariman, and Baram. The filmmaker is now gearing up for the release of his latest production venture, Bad Girl, directed by his former associate Varsha Bharath. However, on Monday, Vetrimaaran announced that Bad Girl will be the final film produced under his banner.
At the press meet of Bad Girl in Chennai, Vetrimaaran revealed his plans to focus more on his filmmaking journey, describing it as a “more freeing” pursuit. He also called producing a “very stressful” job, admitting that he might not be able to continue handling both roles simultaneously. “It’s tough to survive as a small producer working in the independent space, hence the decision to shut down the production house after this film,” said the filmmaker.

Bad Girl explores themes of misogyny and the societal conditioning imposed on young women from an early age. After several hurdles, the film has finally received a UA certificate from the censor board. It stars Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role, alongside Shanti Priya, who makes her return to the big screen after a long hiatus. The supporting cast includes Hridhu Haroon, Teejay Arunasalam, Saranya Ravichandran, and Sashank Bommireddipalli.
Meanwhile, at a promotional event, director Mysskin showered praise on Bad Girl and its director Varsha Bharath. “To speak about three phases in the character’s life, she had chosen three cameramen. She has handled close-ups brilliantly. I have never seen a film with these many close-ups in so many angles, beautifully. When you watch the film, don’t criticize Varsha. She is a diamond, capable of getting the first Oscar award for a Tamil film. She might also get a National Award for her next film,” said the director.
