Superstar Vijay starrer Sarkar is chugging along nicely at the box office. Directed by AR Murugadoss, this film is about an American man who finds out his vote has been cast by somebody else. He jumps into a political battle and becomes a people’s representative. The movie also stars Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Radha Ravi and Yogi Babu.
Despite political backlash, there has been no ebb in the movie’s popularity and moviegoers are still flocking to the theaters, especially in the southern part of the country. The total collection of Sarkar now stands at over Rs 150 crore worldwide.
Protests erupted against a few scenes in Sarkar. It was criticised by Tamil Nadu’s ruling party members for showing state freebies being set on fire. One female antagonist in the movie is named Komalavalli, which was late chief minister Jayalalithaa’s actual name.
Sarkar had to brave mixed reviews. The Indian Express film critic S Subhakeerthana said in her review, “Sarkar belongs to Vijay, but not AR Murugadoss. It’s tailor-made for ‘Thalapathy’ who speaks of farmer suicides, Jallikattu, Tuticorin protests, the fishermen’s issue, ‘marketing and branding’ and how with the support of youngsters, he can save Tamil Nadu. Watch out for the scene where he talks about tomatoes and ketchup, please.”
