Vijay starrer Sarkar released in over 3000 screens around the world on Tuesday. The film earned Rs 30 crore on its opening day in Tamil Nadu alone. The festival release has been directed by AR Murugadoss and also stars Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu and Radha Ravi among others. Cashing on the festive season, Sarkar is expected to break records.
A source close to director AR Murugadoss said, “Sarkar surpassed the day one collection of Baahubali 2 in the state. And we’re expecting Sarkar to be the highest Tamil grosser.”
Sarkar ran into rough waters even before its release when Varun Rajendran accused director AR Murugadoss of plagiarising the story of his film Sengol. The matter got resolved through an out-of-court settlement. Varun was assured by the makers that a letter of appreciation, for imagining a Sarkar-like script about 11 years ago, will be shown at the beginning of the film.
This was followed by another huge setback for the team of Sarkar when the film got leaked on notorious website Tamilrockers soon after its release on Tuesday. Vijay fans have been continuously urging the movie goers to watch the film in theaters, than downloading it illegally from the piracy site.

Indian Express film critic S Subhakeerthana gave Sarkar a two-and-a-half star rating. She wrote, “If Sarkar was a political launchpad for Vijay, then you could say, he won. But unfortunately, this is a film. Those slo-mos, action blocks and stylish-tossing-cigarette-moments doesn’t help if you see the film as a whole. Vijay’s terrific screen presence makes this underwritten saga somewhat bearable. But that doesn’t mean one would enjoy everything in a star-driven film. For instance, the Governor suddenly responds to the Chief Justice’s phone call during a swearing-in ceremony. No, I’m not kidding.”
