Actor Vijay’s latest film Sarkar, which was released in over 3000 screens on Deepavali, is dominating the Tamil box office. A source close to director AR Murugadoss said the film collected more than Rs 30 crore in Tamil Nadu so far. He added, “Sarkar surpassed the day one collection of Baahubali 2 in the state. And we’re expecting Sarkar to be the highest Tamil grosser.”
The source further stated the shows are houseful in theaters for a week. “For the first two days post the release, the film will make Rs 30 crore, and slowly it would reduce to Rs 24 crore by Friday. On Saturday, since it’s a weekend, it will again touch Rs 30 crore,” he told indianexpress.com.
A city-based theater owner, on the condition of anonymity, told Sarkar has given the best opening for Vijay in a long time. “The film is also doing well in the neighbouring states — Karnataka and Kerala, besides overseas. This kind of response usually is seen only for Rajinikanth films. The Sarkar collection will again soar by the weekends as we’re expecting the family crowd,” he said.
According to a source from SPI cinemas, the response for Sarkar is phenomenal. “We are expecting a steady crowd until next Wednesday. Theater owners seem extremely happy that Sarkar is minting money at the box office. The pre-release hype around the film was huge, and as expected, it had the biggest release worldwide.”
Sarkar also stars Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu and Radha Ravi among others in pivotal roles.
