Oscars 2025: Fans react as Suriya’s box-office dud Kanguva enters race with Girls will be Girls, All We Imagine as Light

Kanguva to compete with Girls Will Be Girls and All We Imagine As Light in the Oscars race
The 97th Academy Awards are approaching and ahead of announcement of Oscar nominations, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the list of 323 feature films eligible this year. Out of these, 207 films have met the eligibility criteria for the Best Picture category award. There are six Indian films in the list including Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi) and Girls will be Girls (Hindi-English). While some fans are glad about South cinema getting representation globally, a section of people also wondered as to why Kanguva, a box-office failure and critically panned film, was sent for oscar consideration besides critically acclaimed films Girls Will Be Girls and All We Imagine As Light, which had two Golden Globes nominations.
Siruthai Siva’s directorial was one of the most awaited Indian films of last year. With a lot of buzz around it, starring Tamil superstar Suriya in a dual role, Disha Patani as the female lead and Bobby Deol as the antagonist in his Tamil debut, the epic fantasy action drama was a huge disappointment.

Surprisingly, Kanguva met all the eligibility criterias for contesting in Oscars❗
To be eligible for an Oscar, a film must generally have a theatrical release in a qualifying U.S. market for at least seven consecutive days within the calendar year, typically between January 1st… pic.twitter.com/Id3W88HnAG

The eligibility criteria, as stated by the Academy in a press release, says, “To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”
Kanguva was released digitally recently. Despite being one of the most expensive Indian films ever made with a budget of ₹300-350 crore, it only earned ₹106 crore at the box office. Meanwhile, Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies was also selected as India’s official Oscar entry for the Best International Feature Film category, but it did not make it to the shortlist.
Besides the Best Picture, the Academy has also revealed the shortlists for 10 categories ahead of the Oscars 2025, including Animated Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, International Feature, Live Action Short, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Sound and Visual Effects. The voting will start tomorrow, January 8, 2025, and will end on January 12, 2025. The final nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. Oscars 2025 is scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.
