The makers of Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Mersal are already celebrating as the Tamil film has earned Rs 156 crore even before its release. According to andhraboxoffice.com, Vijay’s film has sold its theatrical rights for Rs 113.5 crore. The broadcast, music and Hindi theatrical rights have been sold for Rs 28.5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 11 crore, respectively.
Mersal has faced several issues on its way to the big screen: a title row, a petition against excessive pricing, a strike and confusion about the censor certificate. But now the makers and Vijay’s fans can heave a sigh of relief as the issues have been resolved. After no new releases in Tamil Nadu theaters for the last two weeks, Mersal’s release is excepted to revive the Kollywood box office as there are no other big releases on Diwali.
As far as tickets are concerned, Vijay’s film is getting a great response on advance booking. Seats are filling up fast, not only in India but overseas as well. The film is also receiving quite an encouraging response in the US too.
Vijay will be playing a triple role in Mersal, which is said to deal with the corruption in India’s medical industry. According to reports, Vijay plays a doctor, magician and a village leader. Mersal also stars S J Suryah, Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Vadivelu and Kovai Sarala among others.
Directed by Atlee, Mersal is Vijay’s biggest release yet with the film being screened in more than 3000 screens. With music scored by AR Rahman, Mersal is also Sri Thenandal Films’ 100th project.
