Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Mersal released at a time when the mood at the box office in Tamil Nadu was gloomy due to the government’s double taxation on the film trade that led to increased movie ticket prices. However, with its release, the film has revived the celebrations across the theaters in the state, where the film is running to packed houses. In some theatres on Sunday, morning shows began as early as 4:30am.
In Chennai, Mersal has collected Rs 5.45 crore so far, said reports. To accommodate the rush, the theatres have increased the number of shows per day to six.
The Vijay-starrer that released on October 18, reportedly grossed more than Rs 100 crore in the first three days. An official confirmation, however, on the same is awaited.
Mersal made its box office debut by raking in over Rs 43 crore from its worldwide ticket sales. And it is also said to be the favourite choice of fans in other parts of the world, giving the new Bollywood releases run for their money.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh opined Mersal was collecting more than Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar in some international markets. “Tamil film #Mersal is chasing a MASSIVE TOTAL in international markets, despite stiff opposition posed by the two Hindi releases…,” he tweeted.
“It won’t be erroneous to state that Tamil film #Mersal is collecting more than the two Hindi releases in some key international markets.(sic),” he added.
Mersal is expected to end its five-day opening weekend on a record-breaking note, going by the initial reports. And the filmmakers are also expected to share the box office numbers soon.

Tollywood star Ravi Teja’s Raja The Great, which also released the same day as Mersal, is doing well at the Telugu box office. “Raja The Great is showing tremendous hold and has collected a gross of Rs 4.5cr with Rs 2.82 crore share on Saturday. The four-day total is Rs 15.73 crore share with a gross of over 24 crore in Telugu states,” said a trade source.
Raja The Great has collected Rs 31 crore approximately until Saturday.
