Even after three weeks of its theatrical release, Tamil star Vijay’s latest release Mersal remains the top choice for moviegoers in Tamil Nadu and in other key international markets for Tamil films.
The film has grossed more than Rs 200 crore from its worldwide theatrical collections. According to the latest reports, the film has raked in more than Rs 100 crore gross in Tamil Nadu alone, and nearly Rs 40 crore from other parts of the country. The latest overseas collection of the film was pegged at Rs 72 crore.
Mersal, which is directed by Atlee, is showing no sign of slowing down in Chennai, where the crowd reportedly continues to throng theaters even braving heavy rains. “13th day, Monday and heavy rains still 90% occupancy for evening show. Can we call this r own #baahubali #Mersal (sic),” tweeted Ruban Mathivanan of GK Cinemas.
Mersal has also broken box office records set by blockbusters in the past. The film benefited from a national debate that it managed to stir with a few scenes in the film that discussed the Centre’s pet projects like GST and Digital India. The film made international headlines when a BJP leader took exception to certain dialogues mouthed by Vijay as they deemed it showed the Modi government in bad light.
The demand for Mersal movie tickets shot up after the audience rushed to theaters worrying that the controversial dialogue in the film may get removed due to political pressure.
Mersal is Atlee’s second consecutive directorial outing with Vijay. Last year, the actor-director duo delivered a blockbuster titled Theri. Atlee is expected to join hands with Vijay for the third time in the row after Vijay completes his next film with director AR Murugadoss.
