Sarkar recently courted controversy after the ruling party objected to a few scenes in the film. The makers re-edited the scenes which showed state-provided freebies being thrown in the fire and even got the film re-certified. Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth also lend their support to the filmmaker and condemned the protests backed by AIADMK. But despite the political backlash and mixed reviews from critics, Sarkar is well on its way to become one of the highest grossing Tamil films this year.

In a move that can be seen as rebellious, Sarkar actor Vijay, in another photo, is seen cutting a cake with little fondant mixers and grinders to mark the success of the film.

Sarkar was released on 3000 screens across the world and has garnered over Rs 200 crore worldwide so far.
