If you are a Tamil movie buff, it is impossible to not know Vaigai Puyal Vadivelu. For decades, the funny man of Tamil cinema has been tickling our funny bone with inimitable one-liners and slapstick comedy. His work is so popular that we were thoroughly entertained by his antics even when he took a break from films, thanks to meme and GIF creators. The legendary comedian needs no dialogues to make people laugh; a simple facial expression of his would make us break into peals of laughter. In a career spanning more than two decades, he has provided us several iconic one-liners and comedy tracks that it is a task to name just a few. Ask any Tamilian to pick his/her favorite Vadivelu track, watch them struggle to choose one. You can probably go, ‘Pavam avangale conpees aitanga pola!’ at their desperation in not able to choose one. For the uninitiated, here is an induction into the world of Vaigai Puyal.
1. Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi
Vadivelu plays the lead role in this hilarious period comedy drama where he essays a twin role. Helmed by Chimbudevan, the film is a classic example of Vadivelu’s impeccable dialogue delivery and body language. As the spoilt, arrogant king, he is an absolute hoot with the dialogues bound to stay with you long after the movie.
It is tough to miss out on this movie when one speaks about Vadivelu. As the chief of Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, Vadivelu’s antics with actor Prashanth are iconic. As the naive attention seeker Kaipulla, Vadivelu gives one his best performances. In fact, the comedy track was so popular that Sivakarthikeyan later did a movie titled Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.
Another rib-tickler branded with the Vadivelu trademark, this movie saw him team with Vijay, another actor known for his comic performances. The exchanges between Vijay and Vadivelu are too funny for words making the track a must mention.
4. Vettri Kodi Kattu
This film made Tamilians familiar with Dubai more than any geography class did. The line ‘Dubai Kuruku Sandhu, Dubai Main road, Dubai’ still echoes in the minds of people, who were probably not born when the movie released. Vadivelu and Parthipan’s combo is deadly with Vadivelu playing the perfect victim of Parthipan’s sarcasm.
No matter who Vadivelu pairs up with, the result is bound to be kickass. Another favourite combo, Prabhudeva and Vadivelu who have also acted together in Manathai Thirudivittai, give a brilliant track in this Shankar movie. Vadivelu’s classification of Jil Jung Juk in this movie is a sensation that the dialogue later was borrowed as a movie title featuring Siddharth.
