The Vijay-starrer, Bigil, that released during the Diwali weekend is performing at a steady pace at the box office. The film has minted over Rs 100 crore during its three day run.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh recently shared on Twitter, “#BOUpdate: It was a BIGGG day [Mon], the national holiday… #HouseFull4 #HF4 packed a whopping number [₹ 30 cr+]… #SaandKiAankh showed massive gains… #MadeInChina saw enhanced footfalls… #Tamil film #Bigil is unstoppable in TN.”
The film has managed to gross Rs 175 crore worldwide. “175 CR+ WW gross in just 4 days – #ThalapathyVijay’s Diwali 💥 #Bigil is now the star’s alltime #3 grosser in double quick time. His 3rd double century loading soon 👌 More to come 👍” trade analyst LM Kaushik tweeted.
Kaushik earlier told indianexpress.com, “The last five Diwali releases of Vijay have been worldwide grossers—be it Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014) Mersal (2017), Sarkar (2018) or Bigil (2019). Undoubtedly, after Rajinikanth, Thalapathy is the big deal. Previously, Vijay didn’t have a market in the Telugu-speaking states, which has changed. Bigil is successful even in Kerala.”
Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai said, “Where Bigil scored high is the overseas market like Malaysia, Europe and the US. Once, the US used to be a stronghold of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.”
Directed by Atlee of Theri and Mersal fame, Bigil is a sports action drama that has Vijay in dual roles. Nayanthara plays the female lead and several actors such as Jackie Shroff, Kathir, Vivek, Anandaraj, Yogi Babu and Daniel Balaji are seen in pivotal roles. The film was released alongside Karthi’s Kaithi, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, on October 25.
Indianexpress.com’s S Subhakeerthana gave the film 2.5 stars. In her review, she wrote, “Though Bigil doesn’t discuss politics, it indirectly keeps telling, Vijay is the face of Tamil Nadu and a potential Chief Ministerial candidate. It also tells the story of Rayappan, Michael’s father. In one of the scenes, Rayappan (the older Vijay) listens to ‘Enna dhaan nadakkum… nadakattume’, a popular number of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. In another one, we get the ‘Thalaivan Irukkiraan’ reference; another MGR film.”
