Tamil actor Bala Singh passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 67.

Coming from a theatre background, Bala Singh’s journey into the film industry was not easy. The actor made his first screen appearance in a bit role in Vaa Indha Pakkam, and he received some attention for his role in Ezhavathu Manithan. But, it was actor Nassar’s directorial debut Avatharam that put him on the map. He played the main antagonist Baasi, which opened floodgates of opportunities for him. Bala went on to star in a slew of memorable films with some of the biggest names of the Tamil film industry.

He also did several popular television serials including Soolam, Rudhraveenai, Nalla Neram and Aathira.

Bala Singh caught his second major break after playing the role of local rowdy Anbu in director Selvaraghavan’s Pudhupettai (2006). His Oscar-worthy performance was as good as Joe Pesci’s in Goodfellas (1990). Especially, his out-of-the-world dance sequence “Variyaa” garnered him a lot of appreciation.

He again collaborated with Selvaraghavan for NGK, which came out earlier this year. Again, Bala played a pivotal role in the film, which featured Suriya in the lead role. His last film was director Santhakumar’s Magamuni.

Bala Singh’s body will be kept at his residence in Chennai’s Virugambakkam for his friends and public to pay their last respects. According to sources, he will be cremated in his hometown, Nagercoil.
