Singer Suresh Wadkar’s alma mater, Ajivasan Sangeet Niketan, celebrated the 14th edition of Vasantotsav at Ajivasan hall last week. At the event, Wadkar was joined by several music maestros, including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Sitara Devi, Padma Shri U. Srinivas, Hariharan among others. The highlight of the event was the felicitation ceremony of Hindustani classical music legend, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Commenting on the occasion, Wadkar stated that they regret the fact that it took time for them to honour a legend like Khan. “We think that we have been late in presenting this award to Khansahab. He is among the most deserving gurus in India. His contribution to Indian classical music by way of his own performances as well as the students trained and groomed by him is tremendous,” stated Wadkar, who added that Vasantotsav is organised every where as they aim to preserve and nurture the pristine Hindustani classical music genre, which is the country’s legacy.
While talking about the annual event, Wadkar stated that it almost takes a year long planning to decide the awardees list and execute everything. The schedule is always adjusted according to Hussain’s availability. He adds, “We are truly honoured and indebted to him for treating Vasantotsav as his own family event and making himself available each year amidst his tight schedule.” According to the yearly ritual, the evening ended with a melodious performance given by Hussain, Srinavas and Khan. They enthralled the audience with their jugalbandi.
Meanwhile, Wadkar has plans to expand Ajivasan’s reach to music lovers and students across the globe. “We do have expansion plans in the near future. Currently, we have our branches in New Jersey and Dubai. Plans for expansion in UK and Australia are currently in the pipeline. But, our first priority would be to open some more branches within Mumbai, as the requests are overwhelming.”
