Your latest song, Meherbaan, has got a tremendous response. Who approached you for this track?
Like always Vishal-Shekhar (composers) called saying, ‘Shilpa come and try out this song’. I reached the studio and started recording the number with the duo and Siddharth (Mahadevan). We recorded the track at the Vishal and Shekhar studios in Bandra. On the first day of the session, I just started off by getting used to the song, lyrics and vibe. The next day, we completed the recording process and wrapped up.
Earlier too, you have worked with Vishal and Shekhar. How is it working with the duo?
The best part about working with Vishal and Shekhar is that they always give me space to be myself. It feels like home now. They have been so encouraging and instrumental in shaping my career. The confidence they have in me and my work means a lot, and it is always a pleasure and honour to work with them.
How do you react when people relate to you as the voice of Katrina Kaif?
It’s a great compliment and feels awesome to be associated with her on-screen.
Any particular actress that you would want to lend your voice to?
Tabu for sure! I have been a huge fan of her work and the person that she is. Hope it happens soon (smiles).
Any music composer who you would like to work with?
Vishal Bhardwaj is someone I really admire. I respect the work he has done so far and the new wave in music that he has brought about. I hope to be a part of his work someday. Sachin – Jigar (Saraiya) is another duo I look forward to working with. The vibe that they have brought into music today is commendable, and I hope they keep growing.
Any new project in particular that you are really looking forward to?
Tigers is a film I am very happy and proud to be a part of. The film is directed by stalwart Danis Tanovic. Pritam has scored the music and I loved singing for him. The vibe of the track is very Indian and Pritam allowed me to sing the track my way. Also, it is the concert season and I love travelling and performing for my fans. So that’s also on the cards in the coming months.
In your journey so far, which song have you enjoyed working on the most?
It has to be Tose naina lage from Anwar. This song is extremely close to my heart and has taught me what thrill and gratitude of music is and can be. I can never thank Mithoon enough for giving me this timeless classic.
How do you look back at your career as a playback singer in the industry?
It’s been a beautiful journey so far. I got the opportunity to work with some of the best people in the industry and learned so much about music and life from all of them. Some of my favourite composers that I have worked with include Vishal – Shekhar, Pritam and Mithoon. All have different styles of working but I have learned so much while working with each one of them. Hope the education and wisdom keeps coming my way.
