Shreyas Talpade turns vigilante

... for the film Baji, the first Marathi superhero film

It is for the first time that a superhero will be seen in a Marathi film and that character will be played by Shreyas Talpade. The actor is coming back to Marathi films after about six years post Sanai Chaughade, which he produced as well as acted in. Here he talks about his experience of working in Baji:

Playing the superhero

Baji is not like a Superman or Spiderman. He does not have any super powers neither is he like Iron Man who uses gadgets. He is more like Zorro and Phantom. The story is legendary folklore kind of a thing, where people believe that for eons Baji comes to save and protect the village whenever it is in trouble. The film also is about adventures and hidden treasures and how Baji eventually saves the village. The film has a lot of action and romance in it.

Taking up the challenge

I have never attempted something like this before, either in Hindi or Marathi. We have seen so many super hero films and loved them and so I was excited. Also every actor wants a change and wants to explore something different. Baji is definitely one of those films which offered me an opportunity to do that. I decided to give it a try. Director Nikhil Mahajan has written it quite well and the scale it’s being made on is like a Hindi film. No compromises are being made. I have always dabbled with different genres like Dor, Om Shanti Om, Golmaal, Welcome To Sajjanpur and this is one such experiment.

Looking the part

The entire film has a story book kind of feel to it. Though he is a super hero, Baji has son of the soil aura around him. There is a Maharastrian element to his look like a pheta and dhoti. People will be able to relate to him as he won’t be some alien coming out of the blue. Baji will be carrying a sword, bow-arrow and riding a white stallion. I’ll soon start my training for all that after we finish this schedule in Konkan near Malvan.

Mission 2014

Besides this, I have my production Poster Boyz which is 90 per cent complete. One small schedule in Pune this month and the film will be ready for release in the first week of July. Baji, which is produced by DAR Motion Pictures & IME Motion Pictures, will come in winters. And my Hindi film Wah Taaj is slated to release sometime this year too.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court directed the Union Home Ministry on February 4 to submit a report to the President within few weeks about the abuse of the Padma Shri award by Telugu movie actor and producer Mohan Babu. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyothi Sengupta and Justice P. V. Sanjay Kumar found that the actor deliberately misused the award and his action was contrary to the judgement of the Supreme Court in this regard. In December last year, the AP High Court had directed producers of the Telugu movie Denikaina Ready to remove the prefix ‘Padma Shri’ before the screen credits of Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam from all copies of the movie. A public interest litigation, filed by senior BJP leader N. Indrasena Reddy in the High Court had contended Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam had used the prefix ‘Padma Shri’ before their names to promote the Telugu feature film Denikaina Ready (Ready For Anything), produced by Mohan Babu.
