This year, it was Bollywood’s eternal dream girl, Hema Malini, who was given the honour. Erstwhile star, Jeetendra presented her with the trophy, while host Shah Rukh Khan who made it even more special by serenading her to the tunes of Dream girl. Issue based films with a strong social message are the one’s that qualify for the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Memorial Award For Excellence In  Cinema, dedicated to Mr Ramnath Goenka, the firebrand publisher of The Indian Express. So if in the past films like Iqbal (a story about a deaf-mute village boy’s cricket dreams),  Firaaq (on 2002-Gujarat riots) were some that made the cut, this year it was the story of Shanmugan Manjunath, the slain Indian Oil Corporation manager that grabbed our attention. Sandeep A. Varma, the writer and director of the film, says that he was so touched by the story of Manjunath who was killed by the mafia for exposing corruption in the oil sector, that he took it up independently and worked on the subject for almost six years. He wants to continue telling similar stories and his next is a political thriller set in Kashmir.

‘Bravery is contagious…’

The Ramnath Goenka Award is for those who understand and respect the power cinema has to shape the public discourse. The Indian Express‘ exponential growth on digital formats as one of India’s largest news websites is testament to the fact that India does appreciate high quality and intelligent content.
This year, we were pleased to see several courageous attempts at films that had a strong message, films that inspired this country and that raised questions. When our company’s founder Ramnath Goenka fought against the Emergency, he was threatened, our advertisers were threatened, newsprint trucks often didn’t make it to the press and his editors were imprisoned.
But all this only motivated him, as it does every employee at the Express. To speak that truth, is power. It’s a trait we saw in the lead character of Sandeep A Varma’s film Manjunath. Six years ago, Manjunath Shanmugam, a 28-year-old Indian Oil Corporation official, was killed by Uttar Pradesh’s oil adulteration mafia for trying to seal an illegal gas station. His peers at the IIM – Lucknow remember him as a man of principles. And as a newspaper that extensively covered his murder and the incidents around it, the award is a salute to his courage and the conviction of the producers of Manjunath. Bravery is CONTAGIOUS, so we celebrated it by presenting the Ramnath Goenka Award to a brave film on a brave man: Manjunath.

2. The film has won two Awards

Jodi of the Year : Shahid Kapoor and Tabu

Shahid Kapoor and Tabu receive their Award from Nikita Dutta and Mohsin Khan, actors of Life OK’s new show Dream Girl Shahid Kapoor and Tabu receive their Award from Nikita Dutta and Mohsin Khan, actors of Life OK’s new show Dream Girl

This was probably the first time in the history of Indian Film Awards that a pair that essayed a mother-son character on screen walked away with the Best Jodi trophy. The passionate scenes between Tabu and Shahid Kapoor in Haider were much talked about when the film released in 2014, but even the two actors didn’t think that they would end up winning an award together. Kapoor was visibly happy to see the different approach.
Quite interestingly, over all these years, while romantic couples have ruled the category, Shah Rukh Khan has maintained the position of King of Romance. He has won this award seven times since its inception. In 2002 and 2003, Khan won it along with Kajol and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan respectively, in 2007, he won it with Rani Mukerji for Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, and in 2008, it was with Deepika Padukone for Om Shanti Om. 2010 got him the Jodi Of The Decade award with Kajol. With Preity Zinta, he won consecutively for two years – 2004 and 2005 – for Kal Ho Na Ho and Veer -Zara respectively. Interestingly, even Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham took the Best Jodi Award for Dostana, while Junior shared the Award with Big B for Paa.
