It is well known that Anushka Sharma plays a jazz singer in Bombay Velvet, but few are aware that her character in the film is a young Catholic girl from Goa who comes to Mumbai to become a jazz singer.
The film’s story, which is spread over 20 years depicts her growth as she goes on to become rich and famous. “When we show the young Rosie in Goa, we’ve used different colour palettes for her clothes and then happy, bright colours when she is performing onstage.

All the clothes that Anushka’s character will be wearing are very western in style,” said costume designer Niharika Bhasin who has also styled all the actors in the film. Ranbir Kapoor, the male lead of the film, she says starts off as a Bombay gunda.
An ambitious boy who wants to become like the rich people he sees around him, Karan Johar’s character of a Parsi entrepreneur, being one of them. “He starts emulating them by copying their style, clothes and as he goes from strength to strength and earns more money, he spends more to look suave and moneyed.
However, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t,” said Bhasin as she spoke about Ranbir’s look in the film. Bombay Velvet, which is directed by Anurag Kashyap, releases on May 15.
