Fraught with danger

Walking precariously on rope bridges, plodding through uneven stony paths is how the team of Purani Jeans reached locations while shooting for the film in Manali

Even though shooting for Purani Jeans in Manali was like an adventure, debutant director Tanushri Chattrji Bassu says the shoot was not without its perils. Manali is one of the most beautiful hill stations and shooting there is nothing short of an adventure. But according to Bassu when you are not used to living in hilly regions and have a team carting shooting equipment, it can be tough. She reveals that a part of Purani Jeans was shot in a forest area called Pandrameel, (it is 15 miles off Manali) a location, the director had singled out to shoot the last part of the story. But one which was not easily accessible.
“Since the story is set in a hill station, it was one of the locations where all the actors Tanuj Virwani, Aditya Seal, and Izabelle Leite who are friends in the film hang out, chatting, playing the guitar etc. Though Pandrameel is very scenic, it could only be accessed by a rope bridge. This bridge would shake and sway whenever we walked over it. It was very scary and we all held on firmly to the side supports while walking over it. Thankfully, there was no untoward incident,” says Bassu.
Walking on stony, meandering paths, crossing the Rohtang Pass in vehicles, and shooting on the edge of a 300 feet high mountain, were some of the other hazardous locations according to Bassu.
“All these locations in the hill stations look stunning on screen, but the audience never realises how difficult it can be to capture them!” says the ad-film maker turned director with a smile.
Produced by Manju Lulla of Eros International and NextGen Films, Purani Jeans releases on May 1.
