Some songs can really tell a story and how! When you blend a melodious folk- based composition with some soulful lyrics penned by Gulzar, you get Bismil from Haider. In the song, singer Sukhwinder Singh, who had earlier hit the bulls eye with Dhan-te-nan in Kaminey, beautifully croons the lines picturised on the central protagonist Haider, that tells the story of love, deceit and the ultimate revenge. What really stands out is the way Gulzar has wonderfully used metaphors to describe how one person’s love can become another person or state’s destruction. At a time when club numbers top the music charts, it takes guts for someone to come up with a composition like this, which is dominated by Kashmiri folk inspired tunes. The song perfectly blends musical instruments like the arabic drums, nagada, rabab among others with clap sounds and the chorus. Full marks to Vishal Bhardwaj, who does complete justice to his role as the music director and presents a song that not only fits the narrative, but is also pure magic to the ears.
