Queen won the Best Film Award and the entire team associated with it came together to celebrate the victory along with Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, director and co-producer Vikas Bahl and producer Anurag Kashyap Queen won the Best Film Award and the entire team associated with it came together to celebrate the victory along with Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, director and co-producer Vikas Bahl and producer Anurag Kashyap

It is quite interesting to note that since the year 1995 when the Screen Awards kicked off, every year the Best Director Award went to the director of the film that won the Best Film trophy. However, in 2005, the 11-year-old pattern broke when Kunal Kohli won the Best Director Award for Hum Tum while Veer-Zara took away the Best Film trophy. Interestingly, even after that, barring a few cases, both the trophies have gone to the same film — including this year when Vikas Bahl won the Best Director Award for Queen, which also took away the Best Film trophy.
In fact, Queen became the film of the year with the maximum number of nominations — 13. According to Anurag Kashyap, one of the producers along with Vikas Bahl, for the film that was distributed by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, it was a team effort that worked besides the strong script and different storyline. He appaluded Vikas Bahl for his efforts.
As for Viacom 18, it was the second win in a row. Last year, the studio won big with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Even before that, it had backed Kahaani that won many trophies.

Best Director: Vikas Bahl (Queen)

Vikas Bahl Vikas Bahl

Whether it was bringing out the essence of the Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi, or showcasing the woes and the route to self-discovery of a typical Delhi girl, who is excitedly preparing for marriage and is dumped just a day before her wedding — Vikas Bahl did it in the best way in Queen.
While critics applauded him, Queen also left the cash registers ringing by crossing the Rs. 60-crore mark. Bahl, who has earlier bagged two National Awards for the children’s film, Chillar Party, said the audiences had now started appreciating good cinema. Visibly media shy, even after winning the trophy, Bahl continued crediting the team — Kangana Ranaut, Anvita Dutt Guptan, Anurag Kashyap among others — for the film’s success.
But Anurag Kashyap made sure that the director shared his experiences while making the film. In fact, Kashyap refused to pose with the Best Film trophy without Bahl and made sure that he was around in every frame.

Best Actor (Male): Shahid Kapoor (Haider)

Shahid Kapoor Shahid Kapoor

In 2014, when actor Shahid Kapoor visited the Screen office for a Screen Chatroom session, he had mentioned how film-maker Vishal Bhardwaj brought out the best in him. Co-incidentally, the two times that Kapoor has won big at the Screen Awards, it was for Bhardwaj’s films. In 2010, Kapoor won the Best Actor (Popular Choice) category when he was basking in the glory of portraying a double role — Guddu and Charlie — in Kaminey (2009) directed by Bhardwaj. This year, when the actor teamed up again with Bhardwaj for Haider — an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in Kashmir — his performance was once again much applauded.
In fact, by his own admission, Kapoor had earlier said that Bhardwaj had given him the “best role” of his life in Kaminey and it was Bhardwaj who wanted to see him as the Hamlet of contemporary times. “I want to see you as Hamlet, because I think that character would be correct for your age. It is one of the most complex roles that has ever been written and will give you the opportunity to do a lot as an actor,” Kapoor had quoted Bhardwaj while talking to us.
Well, it certainly turns out that the character has brought out the best in him as an actor winning him accolades not only Best Actor, but also the Life OK Hero Awards (Male).

Best Actor (Female): Priyanka Chopra (Mary Kom)

Priyanka Chopra Priyanka Chopra

The life of this beauty queen-turned-actor and now singer, has been a rising curve. The actor took away the Best Actor (Female) trophy for her magnificent performance as boxer Mary Kom in the biopic Mary Kom. Before the film’s release, there were many debates across social networking sites if Chopra would be able to pull-off the character of a person from the North-Eastern region of India. Even after the teaser and trailer of the film released, many felt that an actor of North-East origin should have played the part. But Chopra silenced her critics after the film released with her strong performance. On the sidelines of the Awards, she mentioned how it was one of the most difficult films for her as she had to train in boxing and get the physical attributes right. Chopra, who lost her father while shooting for the film, also mentioned that it was a difficult time for her and she is happy that her performance had been appreciated.
Interestingly, Chopra is one of the few female actors, who have won Screen trophies not just in the Best Actor (Female) category (Fashion) but also in the Best Actor In A Negative Role category (Aitraaz and 7 Khoon Maaf).
