Actor Sruthi Hariharan recently accused Arjun Sarja of behaving inappropriately with her while shooting for Vismaya (2016).
Sruthi held a press conference on Sunday in Bangalore. She was subjected to a line of aggressive and insensitive questioning during the interaction. The top question that was repeatedly thrown at her, “Why didn’t you say this story earlier?” and “Why now?”
“I was very afraid back then and still I reacted to the incident as best as I could at the time,” she explained. Some questioned if there were any ulterior motives behind her naming only Arjun Sarja while refusing to disclose the names of other men who misbehaved with her. “Not just me, at least four other women have named Arjun and have come out with stories,” she said.
“I worked with many superstars such as Darshan and Sudeep but none of them have behaved badly with me,” she added.
Sruthi Hariharan said she is being constantly harassed by fans since she named Arjun. “My phone is ringing non-stop,” she claimed. “Callers identified by True Caller as Sarja fan clubs have been calling me and I feel harassed.”
The actor also noted that she is legally preparing a case and soon she will provide the documents supporting her allegations. “I want a logical conclusion to this incident. Because it is not just about one single incident that happened to me. It is about the problem of our society. People in positions of power are abusing power. People who call themselves superstars are taking advantage of those who are vulnerable. That’s wrong,” she said.
Sruthi’s allegations against Arjun in the wake of #MeToo movement in India has divided the Kannada film industry. Sruthi has received lot of support from her colleagues in the industry. Actors Shraddha Srinath, Prakash Raj, Chetan and Samyuktha Hegde among many have expressed solidarity with Sruthi.
Meanwhile, Arjun Sarja has denied Sruthi’s allegations. “I have been in the industry for several decades now. I have worked with 60-70 actress over the years and none have made such complaints. They respect me and stay in touch with me to date,” Arjun told News9.
The Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce has taken cognizance of the situation and has called a meeting with its members. KFCC’s president and film producer Chinne Gowda also said he will meet senior actor Ambareesh to get his advice as to how to deal with the situation.
