The trailer of Remo, starring TV anchor-turned-actor Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, was released on Monday evening and it has everyone rooting for the film. Going by the trailer, the film is an out-and-out commercial entertainer with dialogues designed to draw applause and whistles from the youth.
There is something interesting about male actors playing female roles onscreen for such roles challenge the actor in them. Understanding the mannerisms, attitude and body language of the opposite gender is a difficult task in itself and portraying them flawlessly takes a lot of hard work and talent.
While we have seen many cameos in drag of late, there have been no movies with a leading star portraying a female lead in Tamil films. Arguably, actor Kamal Haasan’s Avvai Shanmugi (1996) is the last film we can think of in this category.
However, the trailer shows Sivakarthikeyan playing the role of a female nurse with ease and confidence. And it is, indeed, fun to watch him in action in this frantic comedy.
The trailer begins with Sivakarthikeyan sharing his ambition of becoming a film star and have his face on a big banner like superstar Rajinikanth’s at Satyam Theatre. He meets ace director K S Ravikumar to seek an acting chance, who in turn reveals that his next film’s hero will have to play a woman. Cut to the next scene, we are introduced to a drool-worthy nurse, winning hearts and fighting bad guys.
Sivakarthikeyan impersonating iconic comedian Goundamani, even as Keerthy Suresh almost catches him in his lie, will leave you in splits. While we also get to see glimpses of other important characters in the film, it is Remo who leaves a mark on us.
The trailer has been viewed more than one million times on YouTube in less than 24 hours and has ratcheted up the expectations of the audience. The film is directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and has music from young heartthrob Anirudh Ravichander, which is also his fourth collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan.
Remo will hit the screens on October 7.
