The Kalki Koechlin couldnt have asked for a better 2011. She got married to her long-time beau, director Anurag Kashyap early in the year, had two releases Shaitan, which won rave reviews and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the first hit in her unconventional film career. Coming up next are the internationally- acclaimed That Girl In Yellow Boots and Sanjay Leela Bhansalis My Friend Pinto. Throw in a play The Real Inspector Hound on the sidelines and the actress has her plate full. Not that she is complaining. This is the first time I have so many releases in a year and am really excited, she grins.
While Shaitan belonged to a space Kalki is familiar with she started with small-budget films (Dev D,Emotional Atayachar),Zindagi.. has catapulted her to the big league. Starring alongside Hrithik Roshan,Farhan Akhtar,Katrina Kaif and her Dev D co-star Abhay Deol,Kalki got a taste of her first big commercial success. It was great to be a part of Zindagi. Zoya (Akhtar) is firm and straightforward, which makes you want to do your best, smiles the actress.
A couple of reviews, however, have panned Kalki for an inconsequential role in the film. But the actress disagrees. Its an extremely hilarious and well-balanced role about a rich girl who is completely at odds with the situation she is in, defends Kalki and is hoping that the successful run will continue.
Besides a hit,her first outing in a multistarrer also put her in the spotlight for a run-in with the lead actress Katrina. Her not being present at the initial promo campaigns made it worse. Its really sad the way people write without clarifying things. I get along very well with Katrina. As for the promotions, except for the first one that I couldnt attend because I was busy with my play,I have gone everywhere including the road trips, quips the petite actress.
Talking about the The Real Inspector Hound,a farcical play that pokes fun at murder mysteries,Kalki says,It has a lot of layers. It is a play within the play and quite a challenge to essay an actor and a character simultaneously. The play is being co-produced by Kalki,Prashant Prakash and Nayantara Kotian under the banner of Quaff Theatre and the actress will also be touring across the country with it soon.
Her next film outing is That Girl In Yellow Boots, which did the festival rounds last year and earned rave reviews. Co-written by Anurag who has also directed it,and Kalki herself,That Girl.. has Kalki playing a British girl who comes to India in search of her father. The film is slated to release on September 3. There were reports of her doing steamy scenes in the film that were leaked on the Internet. Theres nothing steamy about it,I am fully clothed and its just one kiss, she says.
That Girl.. will be followed by My Friend Pinto,a comedy, which has her playing an innocent and sweet girl. Since its my first comedy I am excited about it. The characters are larger than life and cute like cartoons, gushes Kalki, who plays the love interest of Pratik. She dubs it as a Walt Disney kind of an animation film, where even the serious subjects are filmed in a light-hearted manner. As for her co-star Pratik,Kalki describes him as a sincere, hardworking actor who is sometimes lost in his own world.
Kalki has also recently wrapped up shooting for Dibakar Banerjees political thriller Shanghai that has her in the role of an angry, passionate student. The film was shot in a start-to-finish one month schedule in Baramati. Which meant intense work, recalls Kalki adding that Dibakar cans an average of 10 takes for one scene. He pushes the actor to do his best and the role was quite draining because it involved a lot of shouting and crying, says the actress who has earlier played a disturbed girl in Shaitan. She had confessed then that during the climax shoot of Shaitan, which went on for 22 hours, her eyes ended up looking like golf-balls thanks to her incessant crying bout for the scene!
In real life, however,Kalki has a lot to look forward to and if reports are to be believed she is pregnant. Thats another rumour, laughs the actress and in fact, she is currently recovering from malaria!
