The amount of pre-release hype around Thodari, starring Dhanush and Keerthy Suresh, was really high. But this romantic thriller has seemingly failed to live up to the lofty expectations and it is visible in its box office numbers.
Thodari released on Thursday to mostly negative reviews from both audience and critics. Although, the film had a good opening for a week day, the poor reviews affected its box office collection on the following days. According to reports, Thodari has received weak response in cities like Coimbatore even as its business dropped by 40 per cent.
While the makers of Thodari are yet to reveal the official box office numbers, industry trackers have pegged its day one collection at Rs 4.32 crore in Tamil Nadu. And it has clearly failed to overthrow the opening day collection of Iru Mugan, which was Rs 5.25 crore.
The sci-fi thriller starring actor Vikram in the lead role has emerged as this year’s third biggest hit in the Kollywood after Kabali and Theri. In spite of opening to mixed reviews, the film dominated both domestic and overseas markets for a Tamil film in its first two weeks. Even its Telugu version, Inkokkadu did a decent business in Telugu regions, despite a tough competition from Jr NTR and Mohanlal-starrer Janatha Garage.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi’s latest release Aandavan Kattalai, meanwhile, is emerging as a dark horse in the Kollywood box office game. The film, which was released on Friday, has been receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
According to reports, the film has earned Rs 2.8 crore on its opening day, which is a good start given that the advance booking for the film was not up to the mark. However, the word of mouth publicity has ensured a terrific second day for this comic drama, as it is running to packed houses in most of the centres.
“The +ve WOM for #VijaySethupathi – @ritika_offl ‘s #AandavanKattalai has spread so quickly.. Tickets are almost sold out for the weekend..,” said Ramesh Bala, the industry tracker in a tweet.
Aandavan Kattalai is directed by M Manikandan, who made his debut last year with the National Award winning film, Kaaka Muttai. The film also stars Ritika Singh, Pooja Devariya and Nassar in key roles.
