Even as Chiyaan Vikram-starrer Iru Mugan opened decently well at the box office in India, its collections in the US were dull. Iru Mugan was simultaneously released in Tamil and a dubbed version in Telugu, titled Inkokkadu.
The movie came out in the USA a day before it was screened in India. According to Tamil movie distributor in America ATMUS Entertainment, the movie earned $948 on its opening day.
“EKSI #Irumugan $948 from 17 compared to #Inkokkadu $2102 from 16 screens – advance booking for premiere!!,” ATMUS Entertainment tweeted.
Interestingly, the movie got a good collection in the dubbed version as compared to the original in Tamil. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the film is expected to earn around Rs 5 crore on day 1. The film enjoyed good occupancy in the morning and evening shows, which will translate into decent earnings. The final collections will emerge later today.
However, for those who were expecting Vikram to shatter records with Iru Mugan will be disappointed. Tamil films are enjoying a lot of success
Under the direction of Anand Shankar, Iru Mugan is a sci-fi thriller with Vikram playing double roles: Akhilan, a RAW agent and Love, and eccentric scientist. The movie also stars Nayanthara and Nithya Menen in lead female roles. The movie was released on over 1000 screens across the globe.
Earlier, the director won over critics and audiences alike for treating action in his debut film Arima Nambi very realistically. Assuring that the trend has continued in Iru Mugan, he said the action in the film will take the story forward. In fact, Rajinikanth’s Kabali earned over Rs 21 crore on its opening day in TN.
Vikram, who did hits like Anniyan and I, is famous for the transformation he undergoes in almost all his movies. Iru Mugan landed on the silver-screen on the eve of Onam.
The film also has Nassar, Thambi Ramaiah, Bala and Karunakaran in important roles. The cinematography is by RD Rajasekhar while Bhuvan Srinivasan has edited the film. (Iru Mugan movie review)
