Pune-based theatre groups Akanksha Rangabhoomi, headed by Saggherr Loadhii, and Swatantra Theatre, headed by Abhijit Chaudhari and Dhanashree Heblikar, have come together to create two site-specific performances with the help of zero-budget theatre. The initiative has been taken by theatre artiste Ajay Joshi, who is associated with theatre for 25 years. Under this project, the directors of the theatre groups would work with actors of the other group and create a new style of drama.
The directors would produce two plays against the backdrop of available natural settings, where monetary expenses would be kept to a minimum. Joshi says, “These groups are self-contained and don’t last if the playwright or the director leaves the group. The directors and actors get used to each other after a period of time and the scope for further creativity diminishes. Doing theatre in these times is demanding and there is a need to explore various spaces available and that is what we are doing with site-specific performances.”
Loadhii is working with actors of Swatantra Theatre, who speak Hindi, and would perform the play ‘Holi’ at Swatantra Theatre Campus at 6.45 pm on June 8. Chaudhari is working with actors of Akanksha Rangabhoomi, who speak Marathi, and would perform ‘Sultana Dakoo’ at Akanksha Rangabhoomi campus at 6.45 pm on June 9.
