Zayn Malik opens up in rare interview about co-parenting daughter Khai with ex Gigi Hadid, says he wants to be a role model for her

British singer and former member of the boy band One Direction, Zayn Malik, is set to make a comeback after a hiatus, with a new single titled “Love Like This”. The song will be released on July 21, 2023. The 30-year-old, who has not been very active in the public sphere or on social media, especially following his breakup with Gigi Hadid, has now opened up about his relationship with their daughter Khai, and how he has been managing his role as a father.
During a recent episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Zayn expressed his wish to serve as a role model for his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Khai. “Certain things in life can change your perspective on things. For me, ever since I had my daughter, the main thing on my mind has been to be a good example to her. After having a child, I had to step up as a man and as a person, and be this example to her who doesn’t succumb to these feelings (of anxiety). That’s why I am even doing this interview. I used to get a lot of anxiety having a conversation like this just in this kind of environment. I want her to be able to look at me and be like, my dad is doing this and he’s the man, a cool guy.”
When the interviewer asked Zayn what his favourite thing to do with his daughter is, the singer replied: “I just love playing instruments with her and singing with her, especially since she is already showing a lot of musical intelligence already. I will sing and she will sing along, and she can do good harmonies and stuff already although she is only two-and-a-half years. She also remembers full lyrics to songs as well; every word.”
When enquired what her favourite songs were, he said: “She loves Disney movies, so we sing a lot of Disney songs like ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’.”
He also noted that she’s funny and cheeky. “She likes to have a bit of a joke and laugh a lot. She’s chill, but she loves reading as well, which is something I think she definitely took from me. She has an affinity for words and remembers everything.” On how becoming a parent influenced his relationship with his own parents, Zayn said: “You just start having so much respect for the things that they put aside for you. When you realise all the sacrifices that you make as a parent, just to be present with your child, you can’t have nothing but respect for that.”
When asked how co-parenting was going, he said: “Co-parenting is good. We have a really good relationship for Khai. She’s of the utmost importance.”
Zayn and Gigi first sparked romance rumours in 2015 but soon after Gigi appeared in Zayn’s single PillowTalk. They confirmed their romance as they appeared on the cover of Vogue in 2016. The couple parted ways in 2018 but reconciled in 2019. During the lockdown of 2020, the couple confirmed Gigi’s pregnancy.
