Rock icon Tom Petty died on Monday, October 2 at the age of 66 after suffering from a cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home. Even though, in his 40-year-long career Petty never became the most iconic or the most acclaimed rock star in the industry, he has had the most rock-solid career in music that there could be. In between 1976 and 1999, Petty released a total of 10 albums and all of them were gold-certified in the least. And his latest 2014 album, ‘Hypnotic Eye’ was his career’s first ever Billboard 200 topper.
Unlike most of his contemporaries, Petty didn’t talk about who he was or where he came from but rather gave evergreen songs that stood by you all your life. For a number of people, it was pretty difficult to make out that Petty was born and brought up in Gainesville, Florida. Also the fact that he was backed by the Heartbreakers, he could always deliver his songs with real energy and a more than dynamic reach. In his career, Petty made 13 albums in the band Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, three solos, two with The Travelling Wilburys and two with his first band, Mudcrutch.
In his lifetime, Petty had sold more than a whopping 80 million records worldwide, proudly making him one of the best-selling music artistes of all time. Inspired by Elvis Presley and The Beatles, Petty did follow traditional verse-chorus structures but he also added some interesting twists and unique structures within it, making his songs perfect yet casual. Here are his top ten songs.
1. American Girl
2. Don’t Do Me Like That
3. Learning to Fly
4. Free Fallin’
6. I Won’t Back Down
7. Yer So Bad
8. You Don’t Know How It Feels
9. Square One
10. Don’t Come Around Here No More
