Ace mechanic Hashmatullah (Rawal) is the go-to man in Allahabad. He fixes the unfixable with the kind of loving skill only those who work with their hands display. One day,he is asked to repair an old Ford engine, and he takes it on without knowing its significance. And then the town erupts in communal violence, and he is forced to decide between duty and religion.
‘Road To Sangam has a terrific premise. The engine that Hashmatullah is entrusted with was part of the car used to carry Mahatma Gandhis ashes to the Sangam. What could be more emotive? Paresh Rawal turns in a magnificent performance as a man who is very clear about his allegiancenot to his rabble-rousing leaders ( Puri,Malhotra),but to his work and his ethics. The Muslim clergy spout standard poison about being done against; the Hindu faction rails, and its all very predictable.
What could have been an effective clarion call to peace is drowned out by rhetoric.
