Ganapath review: This Tiger Shroff-starrer is a terrible film

The film is set in the kind of future that dystopian Hollywood films keep showing us, where bombed-out shelters containing poverty-stricken folk are prey, and the super-rich, in their flowing capes, are predators. A mention of ‘Mad Max Fury’ is thrown out, even as Ganapath gets ready to wade into yet another fight sequence. Which basically means that the film is bathed in mud-brown colours, both in landscape and costumes, for the large part: it becomes psychedelic when it moves to the city with its skyscrapers and fancy clubs, the only kind of locations there seem to exist, using some of the most inept computer graphics we’ve seen.

So, of course, our hero has to have a coming-of-age track, as he has no idea of who he really is, and his journey, which includes fast cars, slick girls, and a couple of smirking mentors (Jameel Khan and Girish Kulkarni), takes him to a vast, arid landscape where he meets a mysterious guru (Rahman) and a kohl-eyed girl (Sanon) who can keep up her end in a fight. There’s also a backstory in which Ganapath’s sage grandpa (Bachchan) prophesies about a saviour who will save his people from perdition. And there’s a blue-eyed villain (Bakri) who’s always dressed in black; occasionally, there’s mention of a super-villain, who is kept as a reveal for the end.

But basically, it’s all a slack rigmarole, signifying nothing. Can it be that we also need a story along with Tiger Fighting and Dancing, Dancing and Fighting? What a thought.
