Fast X movie review: Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa’s testosterone-fuelled ride is flabby
Fast X movie review: Things go wrong from the get-go in this Vin-Diesel-Jason Momoa face-off and there is never a second when someone is not speeding, crashing, blowing up.
Fast X movie review: Vin Diesel in a still from Fast X. The first rule to going fast is cutting the flab, a rule as basic as it gets. The Fast and Furious enterprise, now into its 10th appearance as just Fast X, however, has just kept adding muscle. The list of beefy actors who have thrown some punches around and are good enough for some more, has been growing, and now has a super villain in the shape and size of Jason Momoa.
And, if Dominic (Diesel) and company – or Family, as he calls them, at least once every few minutes – stand in for traditional masculine heroes who love their cars accessorised up and their girls accessoried down, in equal measure, Momoa’s villain is a sociopath who is gender fluid. That is, he wears pigtails, nail polish, pink robes, and golden loafers, but in all other matters, loves blowing things up as good as the other person.
Watch the final trailer of Fast X here:
As he flounces around vowing “suffering, before death”, a lot of Biblical fire and damnation too keep getting thrown about. There is frequent mention of God, faith, Devil, Cross, resurrection, salvation, miracles, martyrdom etc, etc.
Dominic has a young son now, and of course he is already on the path of being fast. Unlike other children, he is not furious though, at being abandoned at the drop of a hat by his parents who set out on a life-threatening mission to steal some hyper-important chip on behalf of a government agency.
Things go wrong from the get-go, and there is nary a second later when someone is not speeding, crashing, blowing up or just exchanging friendly kicks, with this bunch of heroes as good at combat as they are at cars.
Meanwhile, one car lands on its feet when dropped off a flying helicopter, and one child is passed between two speeding vehicles – twice – safely.
However, there is only once that the film actually gives glimpses of what it meant once to be along for the ride on these testosterone-driven vehicles. It is when a bomb the size of several tonnes is hurtling down Rome streets, threatening the Vatican itself, and must be stopped.
That is an audacious idea, but as basic as it gets, with none of the mumbo-jumbo about what’s under the hood of a car surrounding it.
Sometimes it’s better to be silly than over-smart.
